Alejandro vive
Luis Angel vive
Abraham Hernandes vive

On July 17th, at approximately 11:30 am, masked and heavily armed men, dressed in military gear, broke into the house of compañero Abraham Hernández González, located in the community of Salchi, San Pedro Pochutla, Oaxaca. They violently removed the compañero from his house, loading him into a grey truck with license plate number RH-70-92, accompanied by motorcycles.
From the moment he was taken, various police forces were informed while none of them carried out any effort to locate the compañero. After about five hours, he was found dead near the same community from which he was taken.
The Organization CODEDI (Committee for the Defense of Indigenous Rights) is an autonomous organization working for the Indigenous communities in the Southern Sierra, Central Valleys and Coast of Oaxaca in solidarity with all just causes. Currently they work with around fifty communities, enacting the dream of living autonomously through daily practice. The organization has more than 20 years of service in the communities of Oaxaca.
CODEDI has joined different alliances in the state, country and world; alliances with autonomous processes and other processes of struggle.
The member of their organization, Abraham Ramírez Vásquez, Indigenous leader from Santiago Xanica, was incarcerated from 2004-2011 beneath the orders of the father of the current governor of Oaxaca, José Murat.
On April 21st, 2018, dozens of free, independent, autonomous, etc. media from Mexico and the world met at the Finca Alemania training center in the state of Oaxaca—a state where there currently exists more than 300 mining concessions and two hydroelectric concessions. CODEDI has always struggled for the defense of territory in the state.
During that visit, throughout the course of a week, we shared different experiences of communication: the community radio “Radio Machete” was inaugurated and videos were made with the participation of community members, including children. We learned about the struggle of CODEDI and the factors of which have led to the repression of the organization.
We witnessed first-hand the dignified project aimed at self-management. We shared the struggles of diverse communities working from below. With many sacrifices, and together with the coordinators of the organization, they have constructed little by little the resistance. We were informed of the presence of logging and other business interests on the coast of Oaxaca. These business interests have seen the rapid growth and response of the Indigenous organization as a threat to their interests in these territories. These interests operate with and without permission of the law and in detriment to the community life of the Indigenous peoples that live in the region.
On the Finca Alemania, we witnessed the eighteen workshops of production and formation being carried out such as carpentry, sewing, agroecology, mechanics, natural medicine, animal husbandry, brick-making, bread making, beekeeping, music, theater and others. Currently there exists four levels of autonomous education (pre-school, elementary, middle and high school) where the education programs are linked to the concrete necessities of the communities of the region and the construction of critical thought.
All of these processes have been possible thanks to the rotating collective work (tequio) in which 48 communities participate, represented by the General Assembly with representatives from the local committees. The internal life of the Finca Alemania is organized through the coordination between the youth committee, the trainers, the general committee and the political commission, all of whom work through dialogue in the General Assembly—the principal organ of decision-making of CODEDI.
The demand is for justice and respect for the communities of CODEDI from the assassin politicians such as Ulises Ruiz, Gabino Cue and now the current governor of Oaxaca, Alejandro Murat. These politicians have continually ordered and unleashed persecution with systematic attacks against the resistance of the people.
We remember that on February 12th, 2018, gunmen in a green Chevrolet passed the vehicle where five members of CODEDI were traveling, shooting with assault rifles. In this attack, three people were assassinated: 42-year-old Alejandro Antonio Díaz Cruz, 17-year-old Ignacio Basilio Ventura Martínez and 18-year-old Luis Ángel Martínez. They were hit by bullets from an AR-15—a weapon designated solely for military use.
Emma Martínez, member of CODEDI, and Abraham Ramírez Vázquez, general coordinator of the organization, survived the attacks. Although investigations have begun on part of the Office of the Public Prosecutor of the State of Oaxaca, up to now nobody has been detained for the death of the three compañeros.
For this reason, as free, autonomous, community, etc. media, as well as collectives of diverse characteristics, we speak out against the repression by the political economic system against the compañeros. We call on the diverse social organizations to denounce these assassinations, and to organize to confront these attacks that we know will not stop but will only likely increase.
The undersigned declare our solidarity with the compañeros of CODEDI:
